Sleep envy during week 34

34 weeks (and 3 days)

I know the first thing anyone who has had a baby is going to say is, something to the tune of, "it doesn't get any better" or "it's just preparing you."  But those are the last things I want to hear.  Lack of sleep makes me very grouchy.  That is for sure!

I have never been one to have any problems sleeping.  Mom tells me that from only a few weeks old, I slept very well, unlike my sister Jessica.  Hence why I was the favorite baby!  (Just kidding, Jess.)  I'm sure Brad, my brother-in-law, would attest that I used to be able to sleep just about anywhere and for long periods of time, based on a spring break trip to Orlando a few years ago.

I can honestly say that throughout most of the pregnancy I have not slept nearly as well as I used to, which biologically makes sense that your body would begin to prepare for all the changes that will occur once the little one arrives.  But this week takes the cake on lack of sleep.  Monday night consisted of ~2 hours of non-continuous sleep due to the worst heartburn I've ever experienced.  I was sleeping practically sitting up with four pillows behind me and one on each side.  I tried drinking a glass of milk.  Later I tried a glass of water.  I tried sleeping on my left side, my right side, my back (although I'm not really supposed to at this point).  I tried everything, but nothing seemed to help.  Needless to say, Tuesday morning I was not the most pleasant person.  Then Wednesday night I went to bed almost immediately after getting home from being at a meeting all day at around 9 pm, but then woke at 11 wide awake and was awake until around 1 am when I forced myself to go back to bed.  Even when going to bed and sleeping, I really do not wake feeling rested.  What a frustrating feeling.

The worst part of not being able to sleep this week, was when I glanced over to my slumbering, snoring, sleeping husband dreaming of butterflies and kittens.  Even Berlin and Memphis were sleeping peacefully.  Berlin must have been trying to keep pace with her dad.  It was almost as if their alternating snoring was taunting me.  I wanted to shake them both awake.  If I had to be awake then they should too, right?  But, all will be happy to know I was a considerate and rational wife and let them both continue to dream away peacefully.

I've started "nesting" I believe.  I've washed just about everything up, folded the adorable little onesies, sheets, and blankets, and organized the dresser drawers.  On Tuesday night, Jared asked if he should pack his bag to go to the hospital, after getting home after a meeting and finding me in the baby's room.  I reassured him that I was fine and we had plenty of time.  But that will be a project we begin shortly.  We finished our childbirth classes this week.  We learned about pushing and C-sections.  At the end of the class, Amy, our instructor said that we were ready to have our babies.  Jared and I chuckled, thinking, "are you ever truly ready?"  I guess in a few short weeks we will find out for sure.

The basement is progressing right along.  Korey, our contractor, tells us that it should be finished this upcoming week!  I cannot begin to explain how excited I am to not have dusty footprints across my hardwood floors from the guys using the bathroom on the first floor.  It will be nice to use our alarm system again as well.  And I'm sure Berlin will enjoy not being in her crate throughout the day again.  As she is used to having free-range of the house.  And now she'll have another level of space to explore .... or another few rooms to sleep in is probably more like it.  I'm also ready for Memphis to have his own space back.  He is one messy creature.  Once his "cat closet" is ready, I can reclaim the guest bathroom, and start preparing it for the baby as well!

This week they laid the tile floor in the bathroom, grouted the floor, laid the tack strips for the carpeting, stained the wood for the banister, as well as started and finished the painting - trim, doors, walls, and ceiling.  Good news is that we like the paint colors and the tile.  Although, it's hard to tell for sure until it all comes together.
